Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How can we help?
First time buying fish online? Here's everything you need to know about how Seven Fishes works, from ordering and shipping to settling your new fish in at home. Click any question to expand it.
Ordering
Will my fish look exactly like the photo?
For WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) listings, yes, the photo shows the exact fish you'll receive. For assorted or variety listings, the photos are representative examples of the strain, and your fish will be selected from that group.
Can you hold my order?
Yes, we're happy to hold your order for up to one week so your fish arrive to a tank that's ready for them. Beyond one week, held orders are unable to be refunded, so please only order when you're close to ready to receive your fish.
Do I need a permit to receive fish in my state?
Most states don't require anything. The exceptions are NT (an S11 Permit is required) and TAS (a fish dealer's licence is required). See our permit guide for details.
Also note we cannot send invertebrates or live plants to WA under WA biosecurity laws, live fish are fine.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay, Union Pay and ZipPay (buy now, pay later). All available options are shown at checkout.
Do you sell wholesale?
Yes, we supply retailers and businesses across Australia. Head to our Wholesale Enquiries page to get in touch.
What is transhipping?
Transhipping lets you buy fish directly from overseas breeders (currently Indonesia only). You choose and pay for the fish with the breeder yourself; Seven Fishes handles the import, Australian biosecurity quarantine, and delivery to you. See our Transhipping Terms & Conditions for the full process.
Shipping & Delivery
When do you ship?
All livestock ships Monday to Wednesday to avoid fish being held over the weekend (WA orders ship Mondays only). Dry goods ship Monday to Friday.
Live fish orders placed after Tuesday 11:59pm AEST will generally ship the following Monday, though we'll get them out sooner if we can.
How long does delivery take?
Usually overnight for metropolitan areas and 2–3 nights for regional areas. Timeframes are estimates only, as delays can occur due to courier issues and quarantine checks (WA & TAS). A tracking number is provided with every order.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping for live fish starts at $25, with the final cost calculated at checkout based on the weight and box size your order needs. Shipping costs are not refundable.
How are the fish packed?
Fish are fasted for about 24 hours, bagged with oxygen, and packed in insulated styrofoam boxes, with a free heat pack during the colder months. Read the full walkthrough in our packing and postage guide.
Will my fish survive shipping?
Yes, shipping live fish is routine when done properly, and we've been doing it since 2017. Fish are packed to handle the journey with oxygen-filled bags and insulated boxes. Shipping is still stressful for fish, so proper acclimation on arrival is essential.
In the unlikely event a fish arrives deceased, our DOA policy covers a refund of the fish price, just contact us on the day of arrival with a video of the fish in the unopened bag, in water.
Can I pick up my order instead?
Yes, pick-up is available by appointment at the warehouse door. We do not have a showroom for browsing unfortunately, so please order online first and contact us to collect via appointment.
Nobody will be home on delivery day, what happens?
Couriers will leave the parcel at the door where it's safe to do so. Please note our DOA policy doesn't cover fish left outside overnight because no one was available to receive them, or left overnight at a depot, so we recommend choosing a delivery address where someone can bring the box inside promptly.
Fish Health & Arrival
What should I do when my fish arrives?
Bring the box inside straight away and acclimate the fish before release: float the sealed bag in your tank for 15–20 minutes to match the temperature, then gradually mix small amounts of tank water into the bag over the next 15–30 minutes before gently releasing the fish (avoid pouring the bag water into your tank). For more sensitive species, drip acclimation is a gentler option.

My fish arrived deceased, what do I do?
Contact us at sales@7fishs.com.au on the day the fish arrive with a short video of the fish still in the unopened bag, recorded in water. We'll refund the full price of the fish. Claims can't be processed without clear video evidence. Full details in our DOA policy.
The water in the bag looks blue or green, is that normal?
Completely normal. Bettas can travel in a weak methylene blue solution, which helps prevent infection if fins get torn in transit, and a green tinge comes from Indian almond leaf extract, which is beneficial for the fish. Water can also look brown from tannins, which is equally harmless.
My fish's fins look damaged or torn
Long-finned bettas (Halfmoons, Dumbos) and guppies can chew/damage their own tails from shipping stress, and fin damage can occur in transit. The good news is fins regrow with good care, clean water and quality food. Fin damage isn't covered under the DOA or Refund policies.
My fish isn't eating after arrival
This is common and usually resolves within a few days. Fish can be off their food from the stress of shipping, and they can comfortably handle a few days without eating. The best thing you can do is keep water quality up, offer small amounts once a day and remove anything uneaten so rotting food doesn't foul the water. If your tank has organic matter like detritus or small prey species, fish will often nibble on those and simply be less hungry at feeding time. If it persists beyond a week, get in touch and we can help troubleshoot.
